Eating in Black River
Black River — Rivière Noire — is the south-west corner of the island, and it is where the deep water comes closest to shore. That has made it the centre of big-game fishing in Mauritius for decades, and it is the reason the restaurants here lean so heavily on fish that was landed rather than farmed.
It is a quieter, more spread-out place to eat than Flic en Flac up the coast: fewer restaurants, further apart, more of them attached to a marina or a hotel. It is also the way to Le Morne and the Black River Gorges, so lunch here often sits either side of a drive. Book ahead in the evening — there is less to fall back on if the table has gone.
