Chinese food in Mauritius
Chinese traders, mostly Hakka, settled in Port Louis through the nineteenth century, and the food has been part of ordinary Mauritian eating ever since. Two dishes in particular stopped being foreign a long time ago: mine frit, the fried noodles sold everywhere, and bol renversé — the "upside-down bowl" of rice, meat and a fried egg turned out onto the plate — which is Mauritian rather than Chinese in any other country.
Restaurant Chinese here tends to be Cantonese in style, with a lot of steamed fish and seafood, and portions built for sharing. Chinatown in Port Louis is where the tradition sits, though several of the kitchens below are on the coast.
