Seafood in Mauritius
The lagoon inside the reef and the open water beyond it give Mauritian kitchens two quite different larders. From the lagoon come octopus -- ourite, usually stewed in a rougaille or served cold in a salad -- along with capitaine and vieille rouge. From outside the reef come the big pelagic fish: tuna, marlin, dorado, wahoo.
Worth knowing before you order: fish here is often grilled whole rather than filleted, and the Creole treatments — rougaille, vindaye, cari — are usually better than the European ones. Prices move with the catch, so the menu and the prices on each page below are the ones to check rather than assume.
