Indian food in Mauritius

Indian food is not a foreign cuisine here. Around two thirds of Mauritians descend from labourers who arrived from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh from the 1830s onwards, and the food came with them. What that means in practice is that the everyday cooking of the island is already Indian at its root, and a restaurant billed as Indian is usually offering something more formal than what people eat at home.

Expect mostly North Indian kitchens: a tandoor, breads cooked to order, slow gravies. That is a different thing from Indo-Mauritian street food — dholl puri, gâteaux piments, cari gros pois — which is excellent and almost never appears on a restaurant menu. Several of the kitchens below sit inside hotels or in Port Louis, so it is worth checking the menu and the prices before you go.
